I wanted a pair of compact binoculars to take with me on walks rather than carry my heavier Audubon 8 x 40's. After a great deal of research I settled on these Olympus 8 x 25's and they are brilliant. What really amazes me is the quality of the optics. These little bins give an astonishing amount of light from just 25 mm objective lenses - I believe just as much as the 40 mm ones on my Audubons. I would definitely recommend these binoculars as a light weight, compact alternative to larger bins.

Very good pair of binos. Worth every penny.
The most clear and detailed image I have ever seen through a pair of binos.
I chose these over the x10 magnification because they are steadier to use. I find the larger magnification has too much shake in my hand.
Light enough to take along backpacking (unless your going ultra light).
The neoprene case is just right for these waterproof binos, has a good feel too.
Mods:
I replaced the strap on mine for some paracord and threw the awkward lense cap away. I havent dropped a star for the lense cap as its not needed, the case can be quickly put on while still wearing the binos if your going to be using in hostile situations.

If your in the market for a very usable, compact, robust, waterproof, very high quality pair of binos the search is over!

These binoculars feel like a quality item, very sturdy and I like the non slip rubberised coating. The view through them is clear and fairly bright. Although they are a great size for take anywhere bino's for birding the field of view could do with being just a little greater.

There is the normal dioptre adjustment on the right lens and both sides have a click up and down eye cups which make them very easy for spectacle wearers. Having said that there is a `sweet spot' to these instruments and if you do not set the width just right then you will get `black outs in the view. I do not have a great deal of experience with small binoculars, I have a 8x21 Pentax and some years ago I had a no particular named pair, but these do seem to produce the blackout effect more than I would have expected from a quality pair of bino's. In case you are wondering I do have a fair amount of experience with larger bins, I have a pair of 10x50's, Canon IS 10x30 and Oberwerk 20x80 amoung others and have not noticed this black out effect anywhere else.

Where I do find the Olympus bins a bit of a letdown, hence the 3 stars, is the centre focusing knob. This needs to be focused just absolutely right or the view is, well, out of focus..... I'm sure that statement seems a little strange but, what I'm trying to say is that for bino's it is far to precise bearing in mind these are likely to be used out of doors in rain/cold (they are waterproof) and one might be wearing gloves - in which case it is extremely difficult to come to fine focus - I know I tried with gloves on. Now it may just be my pair but I'm going to have to think long and hard, despite all the good points, about whether or not these are keepers.

UPDATE :

After a few days of fairly intensive use I can add the following observations (pun). Yes, they are over precise regarding focusing but you can get used to that, focus past then drawback, carefully. They are very clear and sharp visually, quite a pleasure to look through, although the occasional black-out if you move your head and not the bins is still a pain. They are more than adequate for bird watching as long as the bird is still, not much use for moving birds unless they are a considerable distance away because of the small (5.5) degree FOV. Excellent for aircraft, although the same caveat applies, need to be a long way away. One advantage (major) of the precise focusing is the 3D effect it produces at 80 to 100 yards. It's very similar to that portrait photographers go for with the back ground etc out of focus. In this case it really makes birds stand out, it's a great effect that I've not seen to the same extent with other binoculars. Due to the limited FOV and consequent low light gathering power of the objectives they are not much use for astronomy, though they could be used in a push, I was able to see the moons of Jupiter, but even with the small size of these bins operator movement was obvious. For astronomy I would strongly recommend Canons' IS range, in particular the 10x30 (light enough to hand hold for quite a while) or the 10x42L's.

UPDATE 2 :

I had the opportunity to compare the Olympus bino's to a pair of Leica 8x32 BR binoculars to-day for a while. My unscientific `results' surprised me. I have to say that while the Leica's were superb in some respects, well built, and felt very good in the hand though a trifle heavy for the size, I have to say the view was no better, if as good, as that seen through the Olympus. They certainly were no brighter, in fact, to my eyes they were not as bright, neither was the field of view that much greater. The Leica's may have, I say may, focussed slightly more precisely but that was about it. They felt little better built than the Japanese bino's but that's about it. In my opinion they were certainly not £700 better binoculars (the ones I used had cost £799 just a few days ago), my gut feeling is that someone is being taken for a little bit of a name ride here.

I have to say the more I used these bino's the more impressed I become, perhaps they are worthy 4 star bino's after all

The image stabilization system alone is worth every penny, 5 Feb 2008

I'll only review the IS aspect of this lens and make one other comment since I have only had it 24 hours and have yet to go out and about with it.

Image Stabilization:
Having solved the problem I comment on below, I hooked this brand new lens up to my 400D and started shooting objects at maximum focal length across the room using available light only. No flash. I took two frames of each, one with IS on, and the other with IS off. Shutter speed was 1/10 - 1/20 second in each case. Yes, 1/10 - 1/20 second and I was using 300mm focal length, hand held. Those frames taken with IS off were blurred beyond any semblance of use. Those with IS on were pin sharp. I was blown away. Truly. One of the frames was of a toy car on a shelf, the car occupying the whole photo. Naturally, depth of field was short - which added to impact - but for the chosen focus area every spec of dust was clearly visible. No lens will completely compensate for bad technique, but I proved that with good techique (in this case how to hold equipment and relax with low shutter speeds) the realms of expectation can be dramatically extended.

Comment:
On first attaching this lens to my 400D the camera would occasionally "hang" mid shot and need the battery removing to reset it; no buttons would operate, the screen went out, and bizarrely the camera's power LED stayed on even when the camera was switched off. I was sure I had a duff lens, but found help on the web saying "FULLY recharge your battery first, and then try again before sending the lens back". They were right. My battery (actually two in a BG-E3 grip) were not showing flat according to the camera but recharging them had the lens working perfectly. The reason for this behaviour is that the IS system demands much more power than a normal lens. Nothing to stop you buying this awesome piece of kit, but something to be aware of.

I bought this lens to use with My EOS 40D last year.

For a lens with a maximum of 300mm focal length it is quite compact and is easy to use hand held, the image stablizer works quite well in all but poor light conditions.

Auto focus although generally good can be a bit hit and miss at times, searching back and forth to find the focus for a few seconds, but it usually focuses well in the end, it does work a lot better in bright light conditions though.

The picture quality is sharp and clear throught the zoom range and the fine detail is well rendered, on most pictures colour is also rendered well, but on some higher contrast subjects, slight colour fringing (chromatic abberations) is apparent especially when you zoom into the picture for a closer look, it is not a major problem, and you can remove it in post processing, but on a lens of this price I would have expected better than that from Canon.

Overall this is a very good lens giving you sharp clear pictures, and it has a good zoom range, it has no major faults and I have been happy with the vast majority of the pictures that I have taken with it, but it loses one star because the autofocus can be a tad slow under certain conditions, and colour fringing can affect some high contrast subjects.

Not perfect, but it is still a very good lens and it is recommended.

This and a Tokina 12-24mm ultra wide angle lens are my travelling companions everywhere I go. The Tokina is wonderful for landscape/seascape shots, the Canon 70-300mm for getting in nice and close for sharp detail. I've also used it very successfully for portraiture (allows you distance, so no need to crowd your model) and for fine art photography subjects. It's an absolute boon for travelling, being fairly light, and the image quality is consistently high every time. Thanks to the Image Stabilisation, hand-held shots, even at the full telephoto 300mm range of things, are plenty sharp enough and despite its relatively small aperture, the IS ensures the lens performs well in fairly dingy light too - providing you know how to set your camera up right. Okay, so the build isn't L class, but then you're not paying L Class money either. For a very useful and extensive zoom range, image quality, and convenience, this lens is invaluable and excellent value for money.

Great Product fast enough for a small business or home use for people who can not stand for slow all in one products.
Especialy I like the dublex option it is a time saver. Both side of documents will appear on your screen within seconds.
It comes Adobe 9 Standard full version and Scandall pro which is fujitsu's own software there are couple more software but they are for trial purposes.

I, like the other reviewers was nearly put off buying from this seller because of the one bad review posted earlier.
My purchase went without a hitch and the package was delivered in seven days. Included were all the items stated and also a nice little lens cleaning kit which also had a mini-tripod in it.

The lens is value for money but you can't expect a top class item at this price. Having said that it is pretty good and using the filters included and with a bit of trial and error, I have got some good shots...

Good Lens Fast Delivery, 1 Jan 2012

Was a bit put off by a bad review but Lens delivered fast even though sent during the christmas post. I was able to keep an eye on delivery status. Good result all round cant wait for good weather to give the lens a real test.
